TOUR DESCRIPTION

The tour has been designed for bird watchers groups, naturalists and students, as well as for tourists and visitors from all over the world. It lasts around 2 hours where guests will have the opportunity to explore a unique tourist destination and observe birds, american crocodiles and other species in their natural environment on board of our safe and comfortable pontoon boats.

tour descrip Guides accompany groups, hand over a brochure showing the 60 commonly sighted birds and provide educational information about the river, its flora and fauna during all the ride.

The tour departs from our private dock located in Tarcoles, Puntarenas. The ride starts by going up the river in search of resident birds such as the magnificent frigatebird, the roseate spoonbill, the boat-billed heron, the black necked stilt and the Clay Colored Robin, Costa Rica's National Bird. Additionally, people will see American Crocodiles of up to 4 meters long, basilisks and iguanas.

Then, it goes down to the Guacalillo Mangrove Estuary, where observers can find four different species of Mangrove: the buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus), the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), the white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) and the black mangrove (Avicennia germinans). This beautiful ecosystem is home of  the colorful scarlet macaw, the northern jacana  and the mangrove swallow.

Finally it heads to the mouth of the river for more bird watching, where coastal birds such as laughing gulls, brown pelicans and royal terns can be seen.

Back in the dock, our visitors can have complimentary beverages including water, mango juice, ice tea or costa rican coffee and get souvenirs of this memorable experience at our complete gift shop. Additionally, there is available yet not included lunch at our restaurant, as well as pick-up and drop-off services available from Jaco and surroundings.
